contentIf you own or run a small business and you are not blogging then you are letting a huge opportunity slip by you.  As a concerned business owner I now you want to get the most bang for your buck.

Blogging has changed the face of the world.  Your potential customers now turn to the internet as often or more often then they do the mail or newspaper.  By setting up a blog you can get your business spot lighted on the internet with very little work and very little capital investment.

You say you don’t know how to blog.  It really isn’t that hard sites like Blogging Beginners will walk you through it step by step and even show you how to optimize it for the search engines at a very reasonable cost.

You say you still wouldn’t be able to run a blog because you have nothing to say.  Guess what that is what employees are for.  You would be surprised at how much your employees will enjoy a break from their regular work routine to write a post on the blog.  Don’t worry you will be able to approve it before it is published.

Small business blogging is a lot like every other type of blogging but you want to stick to items related to your business.

There are some pitfalls you should avoid:

  • Don’t let your blog go months without a post
  • Do get too crazy, keep it business related
  • Do be too stuffy or too corporate – the people reading your blog like to have fun as much as you do entertain them a little.
  • Don’t post just anything do some research and I am sure you will find some topics related to your business that will get you search engine traffic.

Some things you can add to your blog that will help fill space on the blog and build a relationship with your potential customer that big business can’t:

Let all your employees write their own biography.

  • Put in picture of business/social events – For example if you have a number of employees that are on a bowling league feature them in a post about their bowling.  If you have a company softball team include their exploits.
  • Let the employees put up a section about what they are doing, such as working on a charity drive, doing voluteer work, etc.
  • Get the employees and your family members involved.  Some will love it some will hate it but you will find that you have more than enough content to keep your blog going and you will also see that you get interesting content that will bring people back and help them relate to your business.

If you aren’t sure if you want to actually start blogging talk it over with your employees and your spouse you might find that one of them is willing to do it all for you.

Remember every year more and more people are turning to the Internet instead of print or TV to find what they are looking for.  This means if you aren’t online then you will be loosing a higher percentage of customers year after year.  Do you really want to pass that up?

Blogging is the quickest, easiest and most cost effective way to get your small business online.  What are you waiting for?
